Hang Seng Posts Fifth Consecutive Gain; Commercial Sector Drives Rally

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose for the fifth consecutive session on Friday (August 21), climbing 1.2%—or 310.97 points—to close at 26,009.46. This gain pushed the index to its highest closing level since June 2, driven by growing investor interest in commercial and industrial sector stocks.

All sectors posted gains, with the majority of stocks moving into positive territory. Out of the 93 stocks in the index, 76 advanced while only 15 declined. This reflects solid market sentiment as investors returned to seeking risk assets.

AIA Group was the largest contributor to the Hang Seng's rise, gaining approximately 3.3%. Meanwhile, Laopu Gold recorded the biggest gain among major stocks, surging 7.5% amid heightened interest in the gold-related sector.

The rally in Hong Kong markets was also supported by improving global sentiment; pressure on US bond markets began to ease following the US Treasury Department's move to increase its Treasury buyback program. Reduced yield pressure helped boost investor appetite for Asian equities.

Newsmaker Analysis: The Hang Seng is currently demonstrating positive momentum, having recorded gains over five consecutive sessions. Market focus will now shift to the sustainability of foreign capital inflows and China's economic conditions. As long as the index holds above the 26,000 level, there remains potential for further gains, although investors should remain mindful of external risks such as rising oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty.
