Undeterred, Iran Prepares to Counter US Economic Sanctions

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that his country must devise a strategy to counter "unjust sanctions" from the United States, following Washington's plans to implement a new package of economic pressure against Tehran. This statement came a day after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced measures described as the toughest sanctions in history against Iran.

Bessent had previously stated that details of the policy would be announced next Monday. He also noted that applying maximum economic pressure on Iran could potentially reduce the need for the US to engage in major military operations again. This move is part of Washington's effort to pressure Tehran into accepting a peace agreement.

Qalibaf—one of Iran's most influential political figures and a participant in negotiations with the United States—believes there is a close link between economic and security developments. He accused the US and Israel of resorting to economic pressure and information warfare after failing to win a direct military conflict.

During a meeting with Iranian and Iraqi business representatives in Baghdad, Qalibaf called for strengthened economic ties between the two nations. He also advocated for the use of national currencies in bilateral trade to reduce reliance on the US dollar.

Newsmaker Analysis: Rising economic tensions between the US and Iran are a critical factor for global markets, particularly the energy sector. If Iran responds to the new sanctions by restricting oil exports or maintaining constraints in the Strait of Hormuz, the risk of supply disruptions could drive up oil prices once more. However, Iran's efforts to boost non-dollar trade reflect Tehran's long-term strategy to mitigate the impact of financial pressure from Washington. (arl)
