Hang Seng Weakens, Middle East Risks Weigh on Sentiment
The Hang Seng Index weakened on Wednesday (July 22nd), as rising geopolitical risks in the Middle East weighed on investor sentiment. The index fell 0.4%, or around 100 points, to 25,029, after closing flat.
Market pressure arose from renewed tensions between the United States and Iran. Oil prices rose after US forces resumed attacks on Iranian military targets for the 11th consecutive night. This situation made investors more cautious about risky assets.
The Hang Seng's decline occurred despite support from a strong rally on Wall Street for semiconductor stocks. However, this positive sentiment was not enough to offset the pressure from geopolitical risks and concerns about rising energy prices.
Several large stocks weighed heavily on the index. Tencent fell 3.6%, Z.Ai Co fell 3.0%, Xiaomi fell 3.9%, Meituan fell 3.5%, and AIA fell 1.2%.
In terms of market impact, the weakening Hang Seng indicates investors are beginning to reduce risk amid Middle East uncertainty. If oil prices continue to rise, global inflationary pressures could increase and weigh on Asian stock markets. However, market attention remains focused on Zhongji Innolight's planned IPO in Hong Kong, which could raise up to HK$55.05 billion, as well as Moonshot AI's funding plan ahead of its public offering with a valuation of up to US$50 billion.
