US, China Conclude First Day of Trade Talks in Madrid
US and Chinese officials concluded the first day of talks in Madrid on Sunday, addressing strained trade relations, a looming divestiture deadline for the Chinese short-video app TikTok, and Washington’s push for its allies to impose tariffs on Chinese imports over Beijing’s purchases of Russian oil, Reuters reported.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters as he left the central government palace: “We’ll start again in the morning.”Talks were held between delegations led by Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, alongside Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and top trade negotiator Li Chenggang. The meeting took place at the Palacio de Santa Cruz, the baroque building that houses Spain’s foreign ministry, and lasted approximately six hours.
This marks the fourth meeting in as many months between the two sides in various European cities, as they seek to prevent the fractured US-China trade relationship from further unraveling under President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
