Xi Jinping Warns the World: Peace or War?
Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that the world now faces a major choice: "peace or war" and "dialogue or confrontation." This speech was delivered as Beijing held its largest military parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, showcasing missiles, tanks, combat vehicles, and even fighter jets over Tiananmen Square. Xi also pledged to strengthen his country's military might to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Truth Social. He accused Beijing of conspiring against Washington with Russia and North Korea, even directly naming President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump also urged Xi to acknowledge the US's contribution to helping China achieve independence in the past.
The military parade was attended by more than 20 world leaders, including Putin and Kim Jong Un. However, most Western leaders were absent. Kim's presence drew attention because it signaled a deepening relationship between Beijing and Pyongyang, amidst North Korea's increasing cooperation with Russia. Analysts believe this reflects China's strategy of maintaining close ties with North Korea at a time when the region is being influenced by new geopolitical dynamics.
Despite the escalating tensions, analysts believe the parade and meeting will not necessarily derail trade talks between the US and China. The two countries are expected to continue working toward a deal in the coming months, especially after the agreement to eliminate most retaliatory tariffs until mid-November. However, the uncertainty surrounding Washington's policy direction remains a major question mark.
Xi Jinping's speech did not directly address Taiwan, but emphasized the importance of China's military role in defending its territory. This is seen as a strong signal to the world and a reminder that Beijing continues to prioritize sovereignty.
Observers believe this parade is not simply a military display, but a symbol of China's shifting influence in Asia. With the presence of eight Southeast Asian leaders and the absence of Western leaders, it is clear that Beijing is strengthening its role and influence in the region. Meanwhile, the US has accused China of secretly aiding Russia in the Ukraine war, an accusation Beijing has so far denied. (ayu)
