The number of Americans filing initial jobless claims rose slightly to 199,000 for the week ending August 1. This figure was up from 198,000 the previous week but remained below the market forecast of 202,000.
The lower-than-expected data indicates that the rate of layoffs in the US remains relatively limited. This suggests that the labor market has not experienced a sharp downturn, even though some earlier performance indicators had begun to show signs of a slowdown.
The four-week moving average of jobless claims fell by 4,500 to 198,750. With the previous figure recorded at 203,250, this decline reinforces the view that short-term layoff pressures remain under control.
However, continuing jobless claims—representing the number of people receiving ongoing benefits—rose by 24,000 to 1.801 million for the week ending July 25. This increase indicates that some unemployed individuals are taking longer to secure new jobs.
The US dollar regained momentum following the better-than-expected claims data. The dollar index (DXY) edged up to around 99.80, reversing losses from the previous two sessions. Markets are now awaiting the Nonfarm Payrolls report to assess whether labor market conditions are strong enough to sustain the likelihood of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike. (asd)*
