Hang Seng Rises 0.9%, SMIC and Lenovo Lead Gains
The Hang Seng Index closed up 0.9% to 25,606.03 on Friday (May 22), marking its biggest gain since May 7, after a 1% decline in the previous session. The gains were driven by the trade and industrial sectors, with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) rising 7.6% and Lenovo Group Ltd. surging 19.8%, the main contributors to the index.
Of the 90 stocks, 52 rose and 36 fell, reflecting broad market movements. All sectors posted gains, confirming investor optimism in Hong Kong after experiencing pressure in previous sessions.
Technically, the Hang Seng Index fell 0.7% in May and 1.4% this week, despite a 52-week gain of 8.8%. Compared to its 52-week high on January 29, 2026, the index is still 8.7% lower, while it is 13% above its low on June 2, 2025.
The Hang Seng valuation shows a price-to-earnings ratio of 13.2 times based on trailing data and 11.4 times estimated next year's earnings. The dividend yield was recorded at 3.1% over the past 12 months, with the total market capitalization of members reaching HK$29.9 trillion. The 30-day price volatility rose slightly to 15.85%, slightly above the 15.71% seen in the previous session, but still below the one-month average of 20.34%. (asd)
