European Markets Close Lower; Luxury Stocks Weigh Down Indices
European stock markets closed slightly lower in Thursday's trading (August 20) due to pressure on luxury goods stocks and lingering concerns regarding the global macroeconomic outlook. The Euro STOXX 50 index fell 0.2% to 6,432, while the STOXX Europe 600 edged down to 651.
The luxury goods sector was a primary drag on the market. Sentiment toward premium companies soured after data showed China's retail sales growth in July fell short of expectations. This raised concerns about demand from China, one of the world's largest consumer markets for luxury goods.
Pressure also stemmed from the United States. Rising Treasury yields, a weakening dollar, and mounting inflation risks clouded the outlook for discretionary spending. Shares of LVMH and Adidas each fell by approximately 3%, while Hermes declined by about 2%.
The industrial sector also faced pressure. Airbus, Safran, and Rheinmetall dropped around 2%, limiting the ability of major European indices to rebound following losses in recent sessions.
Conversely, shares of Intesa Sanpaolo rose about 0.4% after Banca MPS approved offers involving BPM and Banca Generali as part of efforts to navigate consolidation within the Italian banking sector. However, this gain provided only limited support to the broader market.
