Nikkei Plunges 3.16% as Tech Selloff Hits Japanese Stocks
Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index plunged 3.16% to close at 65,326 on Wednesday, while the broader Topix Index fell 3.09% to 4,012. Japanese equities declined for a second consecutive session as selling pressure intensified across semiconductor and technology stocks.
The weakness followed losses on Wall Street, where AI-related chipmakers faced heavy selling. Investor sentiment was also pressured by elevated global bond yields and rising oil prices, while Japan’s 10-year government bond yield climbed to its highest level in around 30 years this week.
Stocks with significant exposure to the global AI supply chain recorded some of the steepest losses. Kioxia Holdings dropped 12.6%, Furukawa Electric tumbled 13.7%, Advantest slipped 2.3%, Tokyo Electron fell 3.1%, and Fujikura lost 9.7%. Selling also spread to financial and consumer stocks, with Mitsubishi UFJ down 4.4% and Toyota Motor falling 2.7%.(mrv)
