European Stock Markets Weaken, Corporate Actions in the Spotlight
European stock markets closed mostly lower on Monday (July 6th). The Stoxx Europe Index fell 0.4%, the UK's FTSE 100 weakened 0.3%, France's CAC fell 0.3%, and the Swiss Market Index declined 0.9%. Meanwhile, Germany's DAX managed to gain a slight 0.2%.
Economically, Eurozone retail sales data showed limited improvement. Retail sales rose 0.2% in May compared to April, while in the European Union they increased 0.5%. Annually, Eurozone retail sales grew 1.6%, while in the European Union they rose 1.9%. This data indicates that consumption is still growing, but not yet strong enough to drive significant market optimism.
In the corporate sector, Novartis attracted attention after agreeing to acquire Myricx Bio for an initial US$1.1 billion, with potential additional payments of up to US$400 million based on certain milestones. This acquisition aims to strengthen its antibody-drug conjugate-based cancer therapy platform. However, Novartis shares fell 2.2% in Zurich.
Eni shares also fell 0.5% in Milan after the Italian energy company announced a US$225 million phased investment plan to acquire a 25% stake in Black Giant, EnergyX's Chilean unit. The project focuses on lithium development near Salar de Punta Negra in northern Chile. Eni also received a board seat and an option to purchase up to 25% of the project's lithium production.
In the UK, BP shares edged up 0.1% after the company agreed to sell its non-operating interest in the Bay du Nord project in Canada to Equinor. Despite divesting the project, BP retains 100% ownership in two offshore exploration licenses in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Meanwhile, ING shares rose 1.5% in Amsterdam after the Dutch bank agreed to buy approximately 40% of Singular Bank from Warburg Pincus. Singular Bank manages approximately €19 billion (US$21.7 billion) in client assets and will continue to operate independently. In Paris, Airbus rose nearly 2% after reports said the company is targeting deliveries of around 900 aircraft by 2026, although official guidance remains around 870 units. (arl)
