Trump-Xi Meeting, Tariffs, and Taiwan Loom
US President Donald Trump said he expects to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping around September 24th. This coincides with the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Trump made the estimated date while discussing the construction of a new ballroom at the White House at an event on Monday. He cited Xi's potential visit as one of the reasons for the need for a large space to accommodate large crowds.
According to Trump, President Xi is likely to arrive towards the end of September, around the 24th. He said the White House needs a large ballroom because many people want to see the Chinese leader.
If the visit occurs, it would coincide with the UN General Assembly. Trump is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 22nd and typically spends several nights in New York meeting with other world leaders.
Trump has previously said he expects to host Xi in September, but has not provided a specific date. Meanwhile, Xi himself rarely attends the UN General Assembly and has only attended once since taking office in 2012.
The Trump-Xi meeting drew market attention because US-China relations still face significant issues. Although the two countries have shown progress in trade, a number of tensions remain, ranging from the Middle East, the status of Taiwan, to Trump's efforts to reinstate tariff policies against China.
