European Stocks Weaken, Global Sentiment Hit
European stocks weakened again on Wednesday (January 21st), extending the selling pressure that has persisted throughout the week. Renewed trade tensions over Greenland overshadowed the positive impact of what were otherwise quite solid corporate financial reports. Investors appeared to remain cautious amid global uncertainty.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 0.1% in the morning, with the financial services and banking sectors the hardest hit. Both sectors fell around 0.6% each, reflecting investor concerns about the impact of tighter trade policies and a potential economic slowdown.
Market pressure increased after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on eight European countries starting February 1st. The threat is said to remain in effect until the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland. So far, there has been no clear signal that Trump will soften his stance, leaving the market awaiting his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Amid the negative sentiment, some stocks actually recorded gains. Rio Tinto shares rose 3.1% after the mining company reported better-than-expected quarterly iron ore and copper production. Barry Callebaut shares also jumped 5.9% after appointing former Unilever boss Hein Schumacher as CEO.
Meanwhile, UK economic data showed consumer prices rose higher than expected in December. However, service sector inflation was in line with Bank of England expectations, thus not significantly impacting the market. London's FTSE 100 Index moved steadily, indicating a relatively calmer UK market compared to other European exchanges. (alg)
