Pound Holds, BoE in Focus

The pound sterling held steady on Tuesday (July 21st) after weakening for three consecutive days. GBP/USD traded around 1.3430 during the Asian session, having previously approached a two-month high of 1.3550.

The pound's movement is still influenced by differing policy expectations between the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve. The market believes that the direction of interest rates in the UK and the United States will depend heavily on developments in inflation, employment, and the resilience of each country's economy.

In the UK, investors await the release of employment, inflation, and retail sales data to determine whether the BoE will need to maintain high interest rates for longer. Remaining high oil prices also maintain inflation concerns, so the BoE's chances of maintaining a tight policy stance remain open.

Political sentiment has also become a concern after Andy Burnham was officially appointed as British Prime Minister. The market is now closely monitoring the new government's fiscal strategy, including cabinet selections and the nominee for finance minister, who will determine the direction of the UK's budget policy.

From the United States, economic data continues to provide mixed signals for the US dollar. Softening inflation is holding back the dollar's strength, but geopolitical tensions and energy risks continue to provide safe-haven support for the greenback.

As a result, GBP/USD has the potential to move sideways in the short term while the market awaits new signals from UK economic data and the direction of Bank of England (BoE) policy. If UK data is strong and the dollar weakens, the pound could attempt a rebound. However, if geopolitical risks intensify and the dollar finds safe-haven support, GBP/USD risks coming under renewed pressure. (asd)
