Iran Attacks Tanker, US Responds
Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated after Iran attacked a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday (July 21). The attack forced the ship's crew to abandon ship, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the incident.
Simultaneously, the United States launched new attacks on Iranian targets. US Central Command stated the attacks were intended to weaken Iran's ability to attack commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Explosions were reported in several Iranian regions, including Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, and Konarak. This attack was part of the tenth day of US military operations against Iran, following the deaths of several US soldiers in Iranian attacks.
Iran has also expanded its attacks on US military facilities in the Middle East. The IRGC reportedly launched drones at three major US military installations in Kuwait, as well as targeting US bases in Jordan, Syria, and Bahrain.
This conflict is further complicated by the two countries' differing views on the Strait of Hormuz. Iran insists that ships must coordinate with Tehran to pass, while the US believes the passage should remain open to all ships and offer protection to commercial vessels.
As a result, oil prices remain highly volatile, despite weakening due to hopes of mediation. If attacks on tankers continue and the Houthi blockade of Saudi vessels materializes, risks to global energy supply could increase, pushing oil prices higher, supporting the US dollar as a safe haven, and keeping gold sensitive to war risks.
