Trump Pushes Ahead with Trade Talks Despite Tariff Ruling
The Trump administration is pressing ahead with trade negotiations despite a U.S. appeals court ruling that deemed most of President Trump's tariffs illegal. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Sunday that “our trading partners… continue to work very closely with us,” and that deals are progressing “regardless of what this court may say in the interim.”
The Federal Circuit Court’s 7–4 decision found that while Congress granted emergency powers to the president, it did not “explicitly include the power to impose tariffs, duties, or the like, or the power to tax.” The ruling affects reciprocal tariffs introduced in April and those targeting China, Canada, and Mexico in February, but excludes tariffs issued under other legal frameworks. Trump criticized the decision and pledged to appeal to the Supreme Court.
The tariffs will remain in effect until October 14. Trade experts say the administration had anticipated the ruling and is readying fallback strategies.
