Trump Tariffs Take Effect, Trade War Looms
The US government began imposing new tariffs on Friday (July 24) on imported goods from 60 countries. The policy is claimed to be part of an effort to combat the use of forced labor.
Countries that do not yet have regulations prohibiting products produced by forced labor will be subject to a 12.5% tariff. Meanwhile, countries that do have regulations but are deemed not to be enforcing them will be subject to a 10% tariff.
This policy directly impacts purchases of foreign goods by US companies and consumers. Import costs are likely to increase with the implementation of these new levies.
These tariffs are also part of President Donald Trump's strategy to reduce the United States' dependence on imported products.
However, a number of trading partners have responded negatively to the policy. Some countries have even threatened to impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods.
