Trump Says NATO Allies Should Down Russian Aircraft in Breaches
US President Donald Trump said he believed NATO nations should shoot down aircraft that violated their airspace, offering support for allies who have threatened a tougher response following multiple incursions from Russian aircraft.
“Yes, I do,” Trump said when asked by a reporter, as he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
When asked if the US would back up its NATO allies in such a situation, Trump said it “depends on the circumstance” and praised the military alliance for agreeing to ramp up defense spending.
“We’re very strong toward NATO. NATO has stepped up. You know, when they went from 2% to 5% that was great unity,” he said about new military spending targets.
