Trump–Zelenskiy Pave the Way for Peace?
The meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the White House on Monday was more cordial than previous meetings. The two leaders discussed diplomatic steps to end the Russia-Ukraine war, with Trump reaffirming his support for security guarantees for Ukraine, although he has not yet fully endorsed NATO membership.
One of the main points of discussion was the planned US military aid package for Ukraine worth approximately $90 billion, including air defense systems and fighter jets. This aid is said to be part of America's security guarantees for Kyiv, which is expected to strengthen Ukraine's position against Russia.
Trump also revealed that he is arranging a direct meeting between Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This meeting is expected to evolve into a trilateral summit involving Trump, to open the door to a peace agreement. However, no official schedule has been announced.
However, there are differing positions on the ceasefire. European leaders are urging a halt to fighting before negotiations can resume, while Trump believes diplomacy can proceed without a halt to fighting. These differing views add to the uncertainty, even though this meeting is considered a positive step toward potential peace. (ayu)
