Trump Loses Patience; Iran Faces Threat of Attack

US President Donald Trump has stated that he is losing faith in Iranian negotiators. This remark heightens concerns that the conflict in the Middle East will be prolonged, following a resurgence in hostilities after the collapse of a cessation of hostilities in June.

During a cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday (July 31), Trump condemned an Iranian missile attack on US forces in Jordan. He asserted that Tehran frequently provides misleading information and fails to honor commitments made during diplomatic discussions.

Trump warned that the US military could launch a massive strike against Iran. Nevertheless, channels of communication remain open, as Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner continue to engage in talks via intermediaries.

Trust between Washington and Tehran is currently at a low ebb. Iran has also accused the United States of violating commitments and being untrustworthy. This situation diminishes the likelihood of an imminent ceasefire, even as both nations continue to exchange airstrikes.

The conflict, now in its fifth month, is also placing political and economic strain on the Trump administration. Disruptions to energy corridors have driven up fuel prices, while US weapons stockpiles are reportedly running low. Rising gasoline prices are a concern ahead of the US midterm elections in November 2026.

Newsmaker Analysis: Waning diplomatic prospects could push oil prices higher due to the increased risk of supply disruptions in the Middle East. Gold may also benefit from safe-haven demand, though gains could be capped if oil prices fuel inflation and expectations of Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. The US dollar could strengthen as a safe-haven asset, although the costs of war and economic pressures might limit its upward momentum. (arl)
