Putin Visits Beijing, Power of Siberia 2 Gas Project in Focus
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing to strengthen ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping and discuss the progress of Russia's flagship gas project, Power of Siberia 2. The decision on when and how the project will be implemented remains entirely in Beijing's hands, although the visit presents a clear opportunity to accelerate it.
Economic issues are high on the agenda, including bilateral trade, which has exceeded $200 billion for three consecutive years, although total trade is projected to decline by 6.9% to $228 billion by 2025. In addition to the gas project, the two leaders are also likely to discuss cooperation in energy, agriculture, technology, artificial intelligence, and transit corridors through Russia.
The visit also demonstrates China's role in supporting Russia in the face of Western sanctions while maintaining ties with Washington. Beijing is seeking to balance strategic coordination with Moscow without appearing fully aligned with Russia's war in Ukraine.
The main workday agenda includes formal talks on bilateral relations and international issues, the signing of approximately 21 of 40 documents in the presence of the two leaders, cultural activities, and Putin's separate meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The day concluded with a formal reception and a smaller private meeting between Xi and Putin.
Putin's visit came just days after US President Donald Trump concluded his visit to China, placing Xi at the center of complex geopolitics between Washington and Moscow. The primary focus is deepening energy and economic cooperation, while Russia is relying on China to cushion the impact of Western sanctions stemming from the war in Ukraine. (asd)
