UK Jobs Data Eases Concerns

The UK labor market is showing signs of stabilizing ahead of next week's Bank of England interest rate decision. The latest data shows that the number of workers on payrolls fell by only 4,000 in June, better than market expectations of a decline of 8,000.

The number of job vacancies was also relatively stable at 712,000 in the three months to June. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate remained at 4.9% in the three months to May, although Statistics UK cautioned that the quality of the data was limited due to temporary disruptions.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for youth aged 16–24 rose to 16.4%, the highest level since 2014. This indicates that while the labor market is stabilizing overall, pressure remains on younger workers.

A slowdown in wage growth is also evident. Wages without bonuses remained at 3.4% in the three months to May, while private sector wages rose 2.9% annually, the slowest pace since October 2020. This private sector wage data is important because it is one of the key indicators monitored by the Bank of England.

Labor market conditions are a key concern for the Bank of England (BOE), as the central bank wants to ensure wage pressures do not exacerbate inflation. Rising energy prices due to the Iran war and uncertainty about the UK government's employment policy remain additional risks to inflation.

As for the market, this data strengthens the chances of the BOE holding interest rates at its meeting next week. The market currently sees only a small chance of a rate hike, but the risk of a hike before the end of the year remains open if energy inflation strengthens again. The pound sterling has the potential to move cautiously while awaiting the BOE's decision and further economic data. (arl)
