US Jobless Claims Drop Sharply
The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell in the third week of June. Initial claims decreased by 12,000 to 215,000, the lowest level in four weeks. This figure also exceeded market expectations of 225,000.
The decline in initial claims indicates that the US labor market remains quite strong. Although hiring activity has not been particularly aggressive, the number of layoffs has remained low. This indicates that companies are remaining cautious but have not yet shown significant pressure to significantly reduce their workforce.
However, continuing claims actually increased. This figure, which measures the number of unpaid unemployment claims, increased by 21,000 to 1,821,000 in the first week of June. This is the highest level in three months, indicating that some out-of-work workers are taking longer to re-enter the labor market.
Overall, the number of jobless claims is currently higher than at the beginning of the second quarter. However, by historical standards, the US labor market remains relatively solid. Meanwhile, initial claims filed by federal employees fell by 61 to 431, amid market concerns about the US government's efforts to reduce the number of public workers. (gn)
