Nikkei Edges Up, Supported by Automotive Stocks
The Nikkei 225 index closed slightly higher in Tuesday's trading (August 4). The index rose 85 points, or 0.13%, to reach the 63,840 level, following limited movement amidst a mixed performance across stocks.
Yamaha Motor shares led the gains, surging 11.89%. Furukawa Electric followed with an 11.84% rise, while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries strengthened by 8.32%.
Conversely, downward pressure came from NH Foods, which plummeted 8.23%. AGC shares fell 7.42%, while Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding weakened by 7.32%.
These movements indicate that investors remain selective in their stock choices. Sharp gains by several listed companies managed to keep the Nikkei in positive territory, even though selling pressure on other stocks limited the index's rise.
Newsmaker Analysis: The Nikkei managed to remain positive, but the marginal gain suggests that market momentum is not yet strong. Future direction will be influenced by yen movements, corporate earnings reports, and sentiment regarding Japanese industrial and technology stocks. (gn)
