Japanese Stocks Rise, Nikkei Hits Record!
Japanese stocks closed higher on Monday (June 22nd), driven by gains in the property, banking, and textile sectors. This gain sent the Nikkei 225 index up 1.86 percent and set an all-time high on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The biggest gainer came from Fujikura Ltd., which surged 19.38 percent, or 1,000 points, to 6,161. J.Front Retailing Co., Ltd. also surged sharply, rising 15.90 percent to 2,905, hitting an all-time high. Meanwhile, Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. rallied 11.43 percent to 5,031.
Despite the strengthening of the main index, several stocks remained under pressure. Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. was one of the biggest decliners, falling 9.14 percent to 17,550. Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. weakened 7.10 percent to 477.50, while JGC Corp. fell 3.64 percent to 2,618. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, 1,846 stocks advanced, outnumbering the 1,672 that declined, while 257 stocks remained unchanged.
In the commodity market, oil prices weakened. Crude oil for August delivery fell 0.67 percent to US$75.34 per barrel, while Brent for September delivery weakened 1.66 percent to US$78.72 per barrel. Meanwhile, August gold futures rose 1.03 percent to US$4,215.95 per troy ounce. Meanwhile, USD/JPY strengthened 0.23 percent to 161.68, EUR/JPY rose 0.16 percent to 185.30, and US Dollar Index futures edged up 0.05 percent to 100.67. (asd)
