Wall Street Futures Mixed; High Yields and FOMC Weigh on Tech Stocks

US stock futures showed mixed movement in Wednesday's trading following pressure on Wall Street in the previous session. S&P 500 and Dow Jones futures remained largely flat, while Nasdaq 100 futures declined as technology stocks faced renewed pressure from high borrowing costs and concerns regarding the massive funding requirements of the AI sector.

The technology and semiconductor sectors continued to bear the brunt of the pressure. Shares of Oracle, Micron, Marvell, and various chipmakers traded lower in the pre-market session. Persistently high US Treasury yields have made growth stock valuations more sensitive, particularly as the bond market faces pressure from inflation, debt supply, and heavy investment in AI infrastructure.

Energy prices also remain a key factor. Brent crude held above $91 per barrel amidst uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and US-Iran tensions. High oil prices stoke fears of a potential resurgence in inflation, which could keep bond yields elevated and limit the Federal Reserve's room to loosen policy.

Investors are now awaiting the minutes from the July FOMC meeting for clearer signals regarding the interest rate trajectory. The market will be watching closely to see whether the Fed is becoming more concerned about economic weakness or still views inflation as the primary risk. A hawkish tone could further weigh on tech stocks, whereas signals that rates will be held steady—without further hikes—could provide room for a market rebound.

On the corporate front, retail stocks showed mixed performance following quarterly earnings reports. Lowe’s and TJX faced downward pressure, while Target experienced volatility despite posting relatively solid financial results. In the healthcare sector, Moderna shares surged sharply after a cancer vaccine candidate developed jointly with Merck showed positive results in late-stage trials; Merck shares also rose.

Newsmaker Analysis: Wall Street sentiment remains caught in a tug-of-war between the pressure of high yields and positive catalysts from corporate earnings. The Nasdaq remains the most vulnerable index to rising yields due to the heavy weighting of technology stocks. Conversely, a decline in yields and FOMC minutes that are not overly hawkish could trigger a technical rebound. For tonight's US session, the direction of Treasury yields, oil prices, and the content of the Fed minutes are the three key factors to watch. (gn)
