European Markets Flat Ahead of US CPI; Tech Stocks Rise
European stock markets traded relatively flat on Wednesday (Aug 12), with the STOXX 50 and STOXX 600 indices holding near all-time highs. Investors opted to hold off on major moves ahead of the release of US CPI data, which could determine the Federal Reserve's next policy direction.
Market caution was also driven by rising oil prices, which have renewed inflation concerns. If US price pressures remain high, markets could ramp up expectations for interest rate hikes, thereby limiting the upside potential for stocks.
Amid the tail end of the earnings season, several stocks saw significant movement. ABN AMRO surged over 5% after outperforming market expectations, while Vestas jumped more than 18% following a report of increased revenue.
The technology sector was a key driver of gains. Positive sentiment followed a global rally in tech stocks after CoreWeave reported better-than-expected sales growth. ASML Holding rose 2%, Infineon Technologies 1.6%, Siemens Energy 3.5%, and Rheinmetall 1.3%.
Conversely, the luxury goods sector faced pressure. LVMH fell 1.8%, Hermes weakened 1.5%, and Kering dropped 2.9%, capping gains for major European indices.
Newsmaker Analysis: European markets remain resilient near record highs, but the US CPI stands as today's most significant catalyst. Lower inflation could support tech stocks and push indices to new record levels. Conversely, a "hot" CPI reading combined with high oil prices could drive up yields and weigh on market sentiment once again.
