Trump Wants to Talk About Interest Rates, Who's His Choice for Fed Chair?
United States President Donald Trump said he has narrowed down his choice of candidates for the new Federal Reserve (Fed) chair to two: former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh and National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal in the Oval Office, Trump called both men equally great and potential candidates to lead the US central bank next year.
Trump also emphasized that he wants at least some input on interest rate decisions. He believes the president should have a say in policy, although the final decision rests with the Fed chairman. He said this practice of consultation has been practiced in the past and should be reinstated.
Trump has frequently criticized the Fed and its current chairman, Jerome Powell, for being too slow in lowering interest rates. Although the Fed recently cut interest rates by a quarter point, Trump believes this is not enough. He emphasized that a new Fed chairman will be elected soon, hopefully more in line with his views.
