U.S. to Hike Brazil Tariff to 50%, Says White House
President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to raise tariffs on Brazilian goods to 50%, the White House said in a statement. The tariffs will be effective in seven days, a White House official said.
They will be imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977-the same statute Trump used to levy his so-called reciprocal tariffs. Those tariffs are the subject of a high-stakes federal appeals court hearing on Thursday, after a lower court ruled the law did not justify them.
In a fact sheet about the order, the White House said the tariffs will address Brazil's policies toward U.S. tech companies, including "unusual and extraordinary policies and actions harming U.S. companies, the free speech rights of U.S. persons, U.S. foreign policy, and the U.S. economy."
Additionally, the executive order finds that Brazilian legal action against former President Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally, "have undermined the rule of law in Brazil."
Trump previously threatened Brazil with 50% tariffs over its treatment of Bolsonaro and U.S. tech firms, and the U.S. Trade Representative's office has opened a separate tariff investigation into Brazil's tech policies.
