Trump Threatens to Raise Tariffs on India Over Russian Oil Imports
US President Donald Trump has announced he will significantly raise tariffs on imports from India because the country continues to buy oil from Russia. According to Trump, India not only buys large quantities of oil but also resells it for profit. “They don’t care how many people are killed in Ukraine,” Trump wrote on social media, threatening additional tariffs if India doesn’t halt its purchases.
Trump had previously imposed a 25% tariff on Indian exports—one of the highest ever—and is now threatening additional duties if India continues to import Russian oil. This move is part of US pressure on countries accused of aiding Russia’s economy during the Ukraine conflict, with the threat of secondary sanctions taking effect on August 8.
India has responded strongly to the accusations. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs called Trump’s move “absurd” and stated that India is simply pursuing its national interests. They also highlighted that Western countries are still buying energy from Russia. India itself has purchased approximately 1.7 million barrels per day of Russian crude oil this year and exports refined fuels to various countries.
If the US restrictions are actually implemented, India will likely seek oil supplies from other countries, such as the US and the United Arab Emirates. However, analysts believe Trump's move could fuel broader tensions and complicate diplomatic efforts amidst already tense geopolitical conditions. (ayu)
