Trump Promises More Weapons to Ukraine, Criticizes Russian Attack
US President Donald Trump said he would send more weapons to Ukraine, in response to Russia's ongoing massive attack. The statement was made on Monday night (7/7) during a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. According to Trump, Ukraine is "very badly hit" and needs protection. He emphasized that the weapons sent would be defensive, but did not specify the type or amount.
The move is a reversal after the Pentagon previously stopped some shipments of defense missiles and artillery shells to Ukraine. The decision had raised concerns in Kyiv. However, Trump assured that aid would continue to flow, especially after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy spoke directly to him by phone last Friday, asking for the lifting of the suspension of military aid.
Trump also expressed his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he said showed no signs of stopping the attack. He said thousands of people had been killed and regretted that Russia was still bombing Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles. Trump had previously tried to broker peace, but so far those efforts have not yielded results.
The Pentagon previously explained the temporary halt to arms shipments as part of a review of US ammunition stocks following the attack on Iran. Trump ordered a re-evaluation of the stockpile, but not a full halt, the Wall Street Journal reported. The White House said the decision to review was made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Ukraine, meanwhile, is hoping for continued US support amid growing military pressure from Russia.
