Second US Strike Heats Up Middle East Tensions
The United States military has launched another attack on Iran for the second consecutive day. This move increases the risk of escalation and further puts pressure on the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the additional strikes were carried out at the direction of President Donald Trump. The strikes are said to be aimed at weakening Iran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas trade.
This latest attack comes after Trump previously said that the US might attack Iran again. Washington has also revoked permits allowing Iran to sell oil globally in response to attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz blamed on Tehran.
Iran has responded strongly. An adviser to Iran's supreme leader stated that Tehran would respond immediately to the US. Iran's Revolutionary Guards also claimed to have attacked military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain following the previous US attacks.
Both sides accused each other of violating the memorandum of understanding that previously formed the basis of a short-term ceasefire and opened up space for negotiations for 60 days. However, this new attack makes the future of peace talks even more uncertain.
Trump also threatened to reimpose a blockade on Iranian ports and raised the possibility of attacking critical infrastructure such as power plants and desalination facilities. These statements put energy and financial markets on edge, with oil prices soaring due to concerns about supply disruptions from the Strait of Hormuz. (arl)
