UK Core Inflation Hits 3.1%
UK consumer price inflation (CPI) fell to 3.0% in January 2026, from 3.4% in December, and in line with market expectations. This was the lowest annual inflation rate since March 2025, primarily due to slower increases in transport and food prices. Transport costs rose 2.7% (previously 4.0%) as fuel prices fell and airfare inflation eased, while food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 3.6% (from 4.5%).
Inflation also slowed in the housing and utilities (4.5% from 4.9%) and recreation and culture (2.6% from 2.7%), although prices at restaurants and hotels rose more rapidly to 4.1% (from 3.8%). Core inflation fell to 3.1%, the lowest since August 2021, indicating underlying price pressures are easing. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.5%, reversing from a 0.4% increase in December.
