Understanding the Gold Market's Characteristics: Asia Forms an Area, Europe Tests, and America Determines Direction

Gold movements do not occur randomly throughout the day, but rather follow the characteristics of each global market session. In practice, many traders recognize a simple pattern: Asia forms an area, Europe tests, and America determines direction. This pattern is formed due to differences in liquidity, market participants, and economic factors that influence each session.

During the Asian session, gold movements tend to be more stable and limited. The main influencing factors usually come from trading activity in Japan and China, including physical gold demand, currency movements such as the yen, and initial responses to previously emerging global news. Due to its relatively smaller volume, this session is often used by the market to establish initial support and resistance levels.

Entering the European session, liquidity begins to increase as the London market, the world's gold trading center, becomes active. During this phase, gold movements are largely influenced by the strength of the US dollar, bond yields, and global risk-on or risk-off sentiment. Levels formed during the Asian session are often retested, so the potential for breakouts or rejections begins to emerge during this session.

Meanwhile, the American session is the primary determinant of gold's direction. Factors such as US economic data (CPI, NFP, PCE), Federal Reserve policy, as well as dollar movements and bond yields have a significant impact. Volatility is usually highest during this session, so the daily trend direction is often confirmed or even completely changed after the data is released.

Impact on Gold Trading:

Asia: Focus on range formation and initial entry areas

Europe: Momentum begins to build, high breakout/retest potential

America: Main direction determined, highest volatility

Strategy: Avoid aggressive entries in Asia, confirm in Europe, strong execution in America

Risk: Fake breakouts often occur before the American session. (Zaf)
