Nikkei Ends Flat, Chemicals Rise
Japan’s Nikkei stock average closed flat at 38,801.17, as gains in select chemical and electronics stocks helped offset losses in trading firms. Murata Manufacturing rose 5.0%, while Mitsui & Co. fell 1.8%.
Mitsubishi Chemical Group rose 2.0% after announcing plans to sell its drug unit for $3.37 billion. The broader Topix index fell 0.2% to 2,733.01. Investors are focused on President Trump’s tariff plans as well as domestic earnings. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond rose 1.5 basis points to 1.315%. USD/JPY was at 151.81, compared with 151.41 late Friday in New York.
