Dollar Holds Steady Ahead of Labor Data
The US dollar index has stabilized after briefly weakening due to yen-buying intervention by the US and Japan. The dollar's recovery remains limited as the market awaits fresh clues regarding the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy trajectory.
A stronger dollar can exert pressure on gold, as it makes the precious metal more expensive for buyers using other currencies. However, market movements remain subdued ahead of the release of key US labor market data.
Investors will be closely watching the ADP private-sector employment report, followed by the Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) data on Friday. These figures are crucial for assessing whether the labor market remains robust and whether the Fed needs to raise interest rates again this year.
Expectations for higher interest rates persist after three Fed officials supported raising borrowing costs at the last meeting. New York Fed President John Williams also stated that the central bank is prepared to tighten policy if inflationary pressures remain elevated.
Analysis: Strong labor data could boost the dollar and bond yields, thereby pressuring gold. Conversely, weaker-than-expected results could reduce the likelihood of rate hikes and pave the way for gold to strengthen. Markets are expected to remain cautious leading up to the NFP release.
