China Emphasizes Red Lines After Xi-Trump Talks
Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, on Tuesday reminded Washington to respect Beijing's "red lines" following the meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Busan last week that resulted in a trade truce. In remarks delivered online at the annual conference of the US-China Business Council in Shanghai, Xie stated that the meeting had helped ease tensions that had previously worried the business communities in both countries.
Xie emphasized the importance of both countries respecting each other's core interests and core concerns. He listed four of China's "red lines" that must not be crossed: Taiwan, democracy and human rights, the Chinese political system, and the right to development. Xie warned that any attempt to cross these lines would only lead to trouble.
On the occasion, Xie also encouraged both countries to follow through on the trade and economic agreements reached in the talks in Busan and Kuala Lumpur. He emphasized that tariff wars, trade wars, and industrial and technological wars would not lead to positive results, but rather to a dead end.
However, Xie's statement came after Trump revealed that Nvidia's latest Blackwell chips would be exclusively for US companies and not sold to China for security reasons. This added another layer of tension amid efforts to improve economic relations between the two major countries. (asd)
