EU Prepares for New Sanctions and War Funds for Ukraine
EU leaders met in Brussels to discuss new sanctions against Russia and plans to use frozen Russian assets in Europe to fund Ukraine's war effort and economic recovery over the next two years. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also participated in the meeting, urging an immediate ceasefire after nearly four years of war.
The meeting came amid renewed tensions after US President Donald Trump postponed his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding to uncertainty about the peace process. While the EU has been Ukraine's biggest supporter, the bloc is still struggling to play a significant role in the Palestinian conflict due to divisions among its member states.
One of the main focuses of the meeting was the planned use of billions of dollars in frozen Russian assets, particularly the estimated $225 billion held in Belgium. However, the Belgian government and several European countries remain concerned about the consequences of using these funds without definitive guarantees from partner countries.
In addition, the leaders also plan to sign a "roadmap" to strengthen Europe's defenses against a possible future Russian attack. Officials believe Russia may target other European countries within the next three to five years, making preparedness crucial. (az)
