Trump to China: Choose Peace or 100% Tariffs
US President Donald Trump emphasized that rare earths, fentanyl, and soybeans are the three main focuses of trade negotiations with China, as the tariff truce between the two countries expires. In a statement aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said he does not want China to use its supply of rare earths as a bargaining chip, following Beijing's plans to tighten exports of the crucial commodity. Trump also demanded that China halt exports of fentanyl and its raw materials, which he has called a major cause of the opioid crisis in the US.
Furthermore, Trump pushed for China to resume purchases of US soybeans, which had been halted during the previous escalation of the trade war. He called these three issues "very normal things" in bilateral trade relations. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that another round of talks would be held in Malaysia this week, following a virtual meeting he described as "constructive" with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng last Friday. These negotiations will be key to whether new 100% tariffs on Chinese goods will be imposed starting in November. (ads)
