Trump Meets Congressional Leaders, Pressure Mounts Ahead of US Shutdown

President Donald Trump will hold a crucial meeting with the four top leaders of Congress at the White House on Monday (September 29, 2025) in a last-ditch effort to avert a government shutdown. Federal funding is expected to run out by Tuesday night if no agreement is reached. This meeting is crucial given the potential consequences of a complete shutdown.

The meeting will be attended by House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, both Republicans, as well as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, both Democrats. Trump had previously canceled a meeting with the Democratic leaders, deeming their proposals "unserious and ridiculous." Meanwhile, both Republicans have refused to make further concessions.

If the government were to shut down, many federal services would be halted, civil servants' paychecks delayed, and the impact could potentially ripple through already sensitive global markets. This situation reflects a sharp divide between Democrats, who want to maintain funding for social programs, and Republicans, who are demanding deeper budget cuts. This uncertainty also has the potential to shake financial markets more broadly. The impact of the shutdown extends beyond fiscal and political concerns. The delay in the release of key economic data, particularly the jobs report, will make it difficult for the Federal Reserve to determine the direction of interest rate policy. If the jobs data appears weak due to this disruption, the Fed will likely be more compelled to maintain or lower interest rates to maintain economic growth.

This situation typically causes the US dollar to weaken as investors seek safe-haven assets. Gold, as one of the most popular safe-haven assets, is expected to come under additional buying pressure, and its price could rise as uncertainty increases. Therefore, the outcome of this meeting will determine not only the fate of the US federal budget, but also the direction of monetary policy and global market movements in the near future. (ads)
