Trump Challenges Global Pharmaceutical Giants, What Will Happen?
President Donald Trump announced a new policy that has shocked the global market. Starting October 1, 2025, the United States will impose a 100% tariff on all branded or patented drugs imported from abroad.
In a statement on social media, Trump emphasized that this tariff will not apply if pharmaceutical companies are building or have already begun building production plants in the United States. With this policy, he hopes global drug manufacturers will immediately invest and produce directly on US soil.
Trump also stated that this step is part of a strategy to protect national security. His administration had previously launched an investigation into the pharmaceutical industry last April, which now provides a strong basis for the implementation of this zone of entry.
This policy is expected to cause major disruption to the global drug supply chain. International pharmaceutical companies are being pressured to respond immediately, while patients and healthcare professionals in the US are awaiting the impact on drug prices and availability in the domestic market.
