Trump Threatens Russia: Ready to Impose New Tariffs at the UN!
United States President Donald Trump again issued a stern threat at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday (September 23rd). He warned that Washington was ready to impose "strong and massive tariffs" if Russia did not immediately end its war in Ukraine. Trump emphasized that economic pressure would be the US's primary weapon to force Moscow to halt its aggression.
In his speech, Trump also highlighted the stance of European countries that continue to purchase Russian energy. He called this policy tantamount to "funding a war against themselves." He argued that new tariffs would only be effective if the European Union joined the US in pressuring Russia.
Since the war began, most European countries have reduced their dependence on Russian energy. However, some countries, such as Hungary and Slovakia, continue to buy oil, while France, Belgium, and Spain continue to import gas, albeit in smaller volumes. Trump views this as a loophole that could prolong the conflict.
The European Union itself has stepped up its measures against Russia. In addition to imposing sanctions on Chinese and Indian companies involved in the Russian oil trade, Brussels has also targeted crypto platforms linked to Moscow. Most recently, the EU announced plans to halt all Russian energy imports by 2026, a year earlier than originally scheduled. (ads)
