Iran Urges US to Show 'More Realistic' Approach to Nuclear Talks
Iran's top nuclear negotiator said he hopes the US will show a "more realistic approach" at the next round of talks between the two countries.
"Now there is a better understanding on the other side about Iran's fundamental principles and positions," Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told state TV after a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday. "We hope they will come to the next round of talks with a more realistic approach," he added, without elaborating.
Araghchi also criticized US President Donald Trump for presenting a "very deceptive view" of Iran in a speech at an investment summit in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Trump accused the government in Tehran of "stealing the wealth of their people to fund terror and bloodshed abroad."
The comments came hours after the US announced new sanctions on a shipping network accused of helping move billions of dollars worth of Iranian oil.
The timing and location of the next round of talks with the US have not yet been decided, Araghchi said. Deputy foreign ministers from Iran, Britain, France and Germany will meet in Istanbul on Friday to discuss sanctions and Iran's nuclear program separately, he added.
