Trump Rules Out Removing Fed Chair Powell Before Term Ends
U.S. President Donald Trump said he will not remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell before his term ends in May 2026, despite ongoing criticism.
In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump said, “No, no, no. That was a total – why would I do that? I get to replace the person in another short period of time.” While he called Powell “a total stiff” who “just doesn’t like me,” Trump maintained his call for interest rate cuts, adding, “At some point, he will.”
The comments mark Trump’s clearest signal that Powell’s position is secure for now, easing concerns raised last month when Trump’s sharp attacks stirred market unease over the Fed’s independence.
