Trump: War With Iran Could End Soon
US President Donald Trump said on Monday (March 9) that the war against Iran could end soon, calling the conflict "very complete, more or less." Trump made the remarks to CBS News and was quoted by CBS White House correspondent Weijia Jiang, who shared a summary of them on X.
According to Jiang, Trump assessed that the US was "very much" ahead of his initial estimate that the war would take four to five weeks to end. Trump also expressed his assessment that Iran's military capabilities had been significantly weakened, including saying Iran "has no navy, no communications, no air force."
In response, US stock indexes rallied following Jiang's post, in line with a shift in sentiment from geopolitical risk toward expectations of de-escalation. In a separate report, the Kremlin stated that Trump also spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war.
Trump also addressed the change in Iran's supreme leadership. When asked about Iran's new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Trump said he had "no message" for him and mentioned he had someone else in mind to lead Iran, without elaborating. (yds)
