Russia Attacks Ukraine, Injuring Dozens
Russia launched a massive wave of drone and missile attacks on Ukraine early Thursday, targeting the energy sector and railway infrastructure. The attacks reportedly injured at least 26 people, damaged residential buildings, and sparked fires in several areas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that Russia fired 420 drones and 39 missiles, including 11 ballistic missiles, at energy facilities and other critical infrastructure. The Ukrainian military claimed air defenses shot down 374 drones and 32 missiles, but projectiles still struck 32 locations in eight regions, with injuries including children.
Zelenskiy said the attacks targeted gas facilities in the Poltava region and power substations in the Kyiv and Dnipro regions. The government also reported attacks on rail infrastructure in frontline regions such as Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia, increasing the risk of disruption to logistics and transportation services.
In Kharkiv, at least 14 people were reportedly injured—including a seven-year-old child—after the region was struck by two missiles and dozens of drones. Meanwhile, in Zaporizhzhia, drone strikes damaged 19 apartments and left at least 10 people injured. In Kryvyi Rih, damage was reported to residential homes, a kindergarten, and an administrative building, with two injuries.
Authorities in the capital, Kyiv, stated that debris from the downed missiles and drones also damaged several buildings in three districts. Zelenskiy reiterated that Russia continues to attempt to disable Ukraine's energy system—a pattern of attacks that has intensified in recent months and frequently triggers widespread blackouts.
