Trump Threatens to Hold Up Canada-US Bridge: Demands “Compensation” and Half Ownership
US President Donald Trump said he would soon begin negotiations with Canada regarding “compensation” for the construction of a new bridge connecting Ontario (Canada) and Michigan (US). In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the project was proceeding without US approval and said the US had already “given too much” to Canada.
Trump even asserted he would not allow the bridge to open until the US was “fully compensated,” and demanded that Canada treat the US with “fairness and respect.” He also said Washington should own “at least half” of the bridge—a claim that immediately raised questions among the market and the public: does this mean revenue sharing, management rights, or something else?
The bridge in question is the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a major project in the Windsor-Detroit trade corridor. The bridge is projected to begin operation in early 2026, once construction and system testing are complete.
On the Canadian side, the project is being carried out through the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA)—a federal government agency established to build and manage the project. Official information states that the WDBA was established in 2012 and is a non-profit Crown corporation.
Trump's latest threat comes amidst tense US-Canada relations, particularly over trade and Canada's expansion of its trade ties with China. Trump also attacked Canada's move in his post, making the bridge dispute appear to be more than just an infrastructure project—but also a broader political and trade tug-of-war. (az)
