Trump's Nuclear Ultimatum to Iran: Deal or Severe Consequences
US President Donald Trump issued a stark ultimatum to Iran on Wednesday: sit down at the negotiating table immediately and reach a deal on nuclear weapons, or the next US attack will be far worse. Trump delivered the message in a social media post, emphasizing one key demand: no nuclear weapons.
"Hopefully Iran will sit down at the negotiating table soon... NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS... time is running out," Trump wrote. He also recalled that his last warning resulted in military action in June and repeated claims that a US "armada" was approaching the Islamic Republic.
Tehran did not remain silent. Iran's mission to the UN responded sharply: Iran expressed readiness for dialogue based on mutual respect and shared interests, but stressed that if forced, it would defend itself and respond "in an unprecedented manner." Iran also cited the costs of past US wars, citing the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as examples of the high cost of military escalation.
At the same time, Iranian state media reported that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said he had not been in contact with US special envoy Steve Witkoff in recent days and had not requested negotiations—a signal that the diplomatic path is not yet fully “on” as Trump has been pushing.
On the ground, tensions have also risen due to US military movements. Trump said a naval force led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln was approaching Iran. Two US officials previously told Reuters that the Lincoln and its supporting ships had arrived in the Middle East on Monday.
The fleet reportedly departed from the Asia-Pacific region last week, as US-Iran tensions escalated following reports of a violent crackdown on protests in Iran. Although the demonstrations are said to be easing, Trump's threat remains stark: if Iran takes another nuclear step or the situation worsens, the US response could be even more aggressive. (alg)
