Trump's AI Order Sparks Protests, Will It Benefit Big Tech?
US President Donald Trump signed a new executive order to create a national framework for artificial intelligence (AI) regulation. Trump and his tech industry allies believe this will strengthen the United States' position in the AI competition against China and encourage innovation. The order also aims to suppress state-level AI regulations deemed to be hindering technological development.
However, the move immediately drew criticism from Democratic politicians, state officials, and consumer advocacy groups. They argued the order risks weakening public protections and could be unlawful. Senator Amy Klobuchar said the US does need national AI standards, but not by eliminating existing state protections.
In his order, Trump directed the Attorney General to form a task force to challenge state AI laws and instructed the Department of Commerce to identify regulations deemed burdensome. This policy was welcomed by major tech companies like OpenAI, Google, and investor Andreessen Horowitz, which have long opposed local AI regulation.
However, many believe the order will be challenged in court and difficult to enforce. Several states, such as Colorado and California, are continuing their AI regulations, including those on discrimination prevention and safety transparency requirements. Consumer groups argue that Trump's order favors large corporations and has the potential to harm the public if AI is left unchecked. (az)
