Is Trump Ready to Put a Brake on Massive Migration to the US?
US President Donald Trump announced a much tougher immigration crackdown, promising to “temporarily and permanently halt immigration from all Third World countries” so, he said, the US system can “fully recover.” In two posts on the Truth Social platform on Thursday evening Washington time, Trump said he would halt “millions” of immigration permits granted under Joe Biden, expel anyone he deemed not a “net asset” to the US, and revoke all federal benefits for non-citizens. He also spoke of “denaturalizing” migrants deemed disruptive, though he did not elaborate on how this extreme policy would be implemented or which countries he referred to as “third world.”
Trump said his ultimate goal is “reverse migration” to drastically reduce the population of illegal and “disruptive” migrants, including those he said entered through “illegitimate” approval processes under Biden. The plan comes after an Afghan national attacked two National Guard members in Washington, which subsequently killed 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom. The administration used the incident to strengthen its anti-immigration policies, including halting the review of Afghan immigration processes and ordering a review of those already in the US.
According to an internal memo cited by Bloomberg, the Trump administration also plans to review all refugee cases resettled under the Biden administration and freeze their green card applications. However, the path to implementing this plan will not be smooth. Congress has failed for years to pass major immigration reform, while several of Trump's previous executive orders restricting immigration have been repeatedly blocked by the courts. For now, this tough plan is being read more as a political signal reaffirming the administration's firm stance on immigration and homeland security. (az)
