China limits EU market access, von der Leyen says ahead of summit
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticized China for trade distortions and limiting market access for European companies, speaking just two weeks before a summit between the two economic powers.
"If our partnership is to move forward, we need a genuine rebalancing: fewer market distortions, less overcapacity exported from China, and fair, reciprocal access for European businesses in China," von der Leyen told the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
The European Commission president noted that Beijing has implemented export controls on rare earth magnets, which has negatively impacted European Union industries and worsened an already unbalanced trading relationship.
These recent trade restrictions have undermined signs of improving relations between the EU and China that had emerged earlier this year, partly in response to US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.
